Received order for supply of rotary kiln boiler in Finland.(Hitachi Zosen Inova Steinmüller GmbH)

Nov 09, 2022

Hitachi Zosen Inova Steinmüller GmbH (Germany, HZI STM), which designs, constructions, and maintains Energy from Waste (EfW) plants, has recently received orders from Vantaan Energia Oy (Vantaan Energia), a Finnish municipal energy company, for designing and supplying equipment for rotary kiln boiler, which is the main facility of high-temperature incineration plant treating hazardous waste, and services of supervisors for technical guidance during installation and commissioning period.

Vantaan Energia is a municipal energy company jointly owned by Vantaa City and Helsinki City with the goal of phasing out the use of fossil fuels, carbon negativity and promoting a circular economy. The company also operates EfW plants as a means of producing energy without the use of fossil fuels.

Vantaan Energia has two stoker-type EfW plants in Pitkäsuontie in the eastern part of Vantaa City. The first plant was completed in 2014 by Hitachi Zosen Inova (HZI), the parent company of HZI STM, and the second plant was completed in 2022 by HZI STM.

The new plant will now use a rotary kiln boiler (one line, approximately 40,000t/ year) to treat non-recyclable hazardous wastes that require high-temperature treatment such as paints and mineral oils. HZI STM has a track record of rotary kiln technology and constructed Vantaan's existing EfW plant. The plant is scheduled to start operation in summer 2025 and is capable of supplying between 12 MW and 24 MW of heat energy. Respectively, this will meet the heat energy needs of around 2,400 homes with stable and secure energy production.

HZI STM became a wholly owned subsidiary of HZI in February 2022, and has steadily resumed business activities as the Hitachi Zosen Group, including an order for major equipment supply work for Scotland, UK in July of this year.

Hitachi Zosen Group will continue to work toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted at the UN Summit and the realization of a recycling-oriented society through our clean energy technologies.
