NAC acquires a portion of Deep Isolation's shares ~ Contributing to the Disposal of Spent Fuel and High-Level Nuclear Waste in the United States ~

Nov 20, 2020

NAC International Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hitachi Zosen Corporation in the United States that designs, transports, and consults on containers for the transportation and storage of spent fuel and High-Level Nuclear Waste(HLW), has recently acquired a portion of the shares of Deep Isolation, Inc., a company that proposes an innovative solution for the disposal of spent fuel and HLW.

Spent fuel and HLW are currently stored in intermediate storage facilities in the United States, but the ultimate disposition is to be geological disposal deep underground. Deep Isolation proposes an optimal solution for geological disposal of spent fuel and HLW using technology for horizontal drilling to permanently dispose of wastes in drillhole canisters emplaced in ultra-deep horizontal drillholes deep below the earth's surface and isolated from the biosphere.

NAC will cooperate with Deep Isolation in the development of special canisters for the horizontal drillhole disposal.

Currently, Hitachi Zosen and NAC mainly receive orders for casks and canisters for the transport and storage of spent fuel in the United States, but NAC intends to further expand into disposal of spent fuel and HLW by acquiring a portion of shares of Deep Isolation.

The Hitachi Zosen Group aims as part of its 2030 vision to become a "solution partner that contributes to realizing of sustainable and safe & secure society", and with NAC's participation will contribute to safety and security of the society by providing containers that can safely store, transport and dispose of spent fuel and HLW.
