how power generation works

Background of this initiative

In 2015, a corporate group represented by Hitachi Zosen received an order from Nagano Regional Association (coalition chairman: Hisao Kato, Nagano City Mayor) a coalition formed from three cities, four towns and two villages in Nagano Prefecture for the development and operation of Nagano Regional Association Incinerator Facility A. In February 2019, the Nagano Environmental Energy Center was completed.
Hitachi Zosen signed a contract with Nagano City to supply electricity in January this year, prior to the completion of the construction of the center as a model business for local production and consumption of electricity. After the completion of the construction, Hitachi Zosen purchased all of the surplus electricity generated at the facility (approximately 32 million kWh per year), and since April we have supplied it to 80 elementary and junior high schools, high schools in Nagano City.
The aim of the class was to provide an opportunity for the children of Nagano Municipal Shinonoinishi Elementary School, one of the schools eligible for electric power supply, to learn about a recycling-based society. This was the first such class for Nagano City.

Content of class

Our staff served as lecturers and held classes for approximately 120 fourth-grade elementary school students under the theme of "Travel of Waste You Abandoned."
Through lectures, quizzes, and experiments, the students were taught about the mechanisms of thermal recycling and waste incineration, which are energy sources, and also conveyed to them that their waste became electricity and is being used in their schools.
Participating elementary school students commented that they enjoyed learning about electrical, that they were happy to learn that garbage was electricity, and that they wanted to reduce waste and pay attention to separating garbage.

In cooperation with our customers, Hitachi Zosen will hold on-site classes and events to raise awareness of environmental issues. In conjunction with our business activities, we will also emphasize the importance of the environment and contribute to the achievement of SDGs.
