Confirmed as Retail Electricity Business for the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Buildings : 100% of electricity received at Main Building No. 1 to be from renewable energy
Jul 11, 2019
Hitachi Zosen Corporation submitted a bid to supply renewable energy-based electricity to use at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Buildings under the unit price contract offered by Tokyo Metropolis (Governor: Yuriko Koike), and recently concluded a contract as an electricity retailer.
In line with the ideals of RE100, or Renewable Energy 100%,*1 Tokyo Metropolis aims to achieve RE100 in the Metropolitan Government Buildings by ensuring all power used at the Metropolitan Government Buildings is from renewable energy sources. To that end, Hitachi Zosen will supply electricity from biomass power generation facilities to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Buildings from August 1, 2019, to September 30, 2020. At present, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Buildings (Main Building No. 1, Main Building No. 2, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly Building) receive approximately 36 million kWh/year of electricity, but starting in August, 100% of the electricity received at Building No. 1 and approx.80% of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Buildings complex as a whole will be supplied from renewable energy sources.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) carried out the bidding for this project using the first comprehensive assessment method by renewable energy in Japan for electricity retailers, and in the decision-making on the successful bidder, Hitachi Zosen stood out for its proposal, track record in supplying electricity and the electricity supply plan it proposed.
In addition, TMG is aiming to reduce its CO2 emissions, and has implemented the Tokyo Cap-and-Trade Program,*2 which requires energy consumers such as office buildings to reduce their CO2 emissions. Under this program, Hitachi Zosen has been recognized by TMG as a Low Carbon Electricity Supplier 2years in a row.
The environment and energy had been chosen as one of the key themes for the 2019 G20 Summit in Osaka, and climate change and energy are being debated. Hitachi Zosen is involved in a range of renewable energy-related businesses, including biomass power generation, offshore and land-based wind power generation, and solar power generation, and will actively contribute to achieving a sustainable society through spreading the use of these renewable energies.
