New Urea Dilution System Ideal for Marine SCR Launched : Contributes to stable, low-cost NOx emissions control
May 17, 2019
Hitachi Zosen Corporation has developed and begun sales of a new urea dilution system (the UDS Series) for SCR systems installed in marine engines. This device produces urea water, used as a reducing agent for SCR systems that scrub NOx (nitrogen oxide), from powdered urea and the distilled water obtained from shipboard water production equipment. The urea water storage tank is more compact, and can produce high-quality urea water at low cost on board, contributing to the stable elimination of nitrogen dioxide.
Urea water production steps
This device uses simply-configured machinery installed on compact skids. This makes it easy to operate, and after the urea powder is added the urea water is created fully automatically. It takes about four hours to produce urea water. The production steps are shown in a. to d. below.
- aTurn on power.
- bAdd urea powder, enter amount added on the touch panel.
- cUrea production and concentration control is carried out automatically.
- dTransferred to the urea water holding tank.
Features
- 1A lineup featuring three types to choose to select urea water usage rates.
- 2Allows urea water production volumes to be optimized to suit SCR operation in regulated waters.
- 3High levels of reliability and ease of operation developed from a wealth of operation on trial ships.
- 4Anti-shock function good enough to survive sloshing caused by ship listing or drop shocks from adding urea powder.
- 5Uses urea powder suited for long-term storage that is easy to transport and control temperatures.
- 6Contributes to reducing the size of urea water storage tanks.

The first order for this device was obtained recently from Yanmar Co., Ltd. (Kita-ku, Osaka. President: Takehito Yamaoka). Shipment will be made in August 2019, and it will be installed along with a diesel generator and SCR system made by Yanmar in a ship being constructed by Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (Imabari City, Ehime Prefecture. President: Toshiyuki Higaki).
Hitachi Zosen is working to expand sales of this device for marine SCR systems, which are expected to become more popular as measures for the Tier III Regulations on NOx emissions during ship operation as set out by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
