Supplying Electrical Power to Nagano Schools from a Waste Incineration Plant: Hitachi Zosen's first model project for local production/local consumption of power

Feb 19, 2019

Hitachi Zosen Corporation has signed a contract with Nagano City (Mayor: Hisao Kato) to supply electricity as a model project. As part of this contract, Hitachi Zosen will supply electricity generated from waste incineration to a total of eighty municipal elementary, middle, and high schools in the city. This local production/local consumption of power from waste incineration plants is a first for Hitachi Zosen.

Contract details

Hitachi Zosen will purchase the surplus electricity (32 million kWh annually) generated by the Nagano Environmental Energy Center (operations to start in March 2019), an energy-from-waste facility currently being constructed by a consortium led by Hitachi Zosen, and supply it to a total of eighty municipal elementary, middle, and high schools in Nagano City (see the diagram below).
In addition to reducing electrical utility costs,*1 this is expected to have positive environmental effects such as expected reduction of CO2 emissions.

  1. *1When compared using the same amount of electricity consumed at present.

Hitachi Zosen will work with Nagano City to contribute to promoting Nagano City's global warming measures by providing opportunities to learn about a recycling society where the waste materials you generate turns into the electricity that powers your school. We will also present the roles, etc. of energy-from-waste plants and thermal recycling whereby waste materials can be used as an energy source through sending instructors to give classes in environmental education, field trips, environmental education flyers, and other methods targeting the children at schools this electricity will be supplied to.

Future outlook

Hitachi Zosen rolled out its electricity retail business on July 1, 2015. The main electricity sources are the energy-from-waste plants we have delivered, which are noted for being very environmentally-friendly, only putting out 0.085 kg*3 of CO2 emissions per 1 kWh, an extremely low figure. In future, the Hitachi Zosen Group will continue to actively propose local production/local consumption of electricity to help local regions become low carbon societies as we move towards our business goal of becoming a solutions provider that will bring about a recycling society, as well as work to promote renewable energy and contribute to achieving the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals).
